About

Modal is cloud infrastructure for AI workloads. Teams use it for generative AI inference, LLM fine-tuning, batch processing, sandboxed code execution, and collaborative notebooks. To get the developer experience they wanted, the team built their own file system, container runtime, scheduler, and container image builder.

Founded by Erik Bernhardsson and Akshat Bubna. The team includes the creators of Seaborn and Luigi, academic researchers, and international olympiad medalists. Customers include Lovable and Substack, with use cases spanning generative AI, computational biotech, and media processing.

Raised over $110M from Lux Capital, Redpoint, Amplify, Essence, Definition Capital, and Creandum. Offices in New York, Stockholm, and San Francisco.
